A Tribute to Evelyn Bentley (1921-2013)
A memorial service for the life of Evelyn Bentley, the founder of the Bristol Child Contact Centre, was held on the 24th October at Trinity-Henleaze United Reformed Church, attended by many current and previous Contact Centre volunteers.
Evelyn was born in 1921, married in 1946 and was devoted to her husband and extended family. Having brought up her children and seen them go out into the world, she decided to take a degree and at the age of 56 she graduated in English. Shortly afterwards she became a magistrate, serving from 1978 until 1991.
In 1990, Evelyn founded the Bristol Child Contact Centre, at a time when very few such services existed. The Centre has continued to run in the same church hall through the last 23 years, and many children have benefitted from her initiative.
For her services to the community as a magistrate and for the founding and running of the Centre, Evelyn was awarded an MBE in 1998.
